Pennsylvania is at risk of an undercount in the 2020 Census, and this could mean a significant loss of federal funds for healthcare, nutrition assistance, transportation, housing, education, programs for children and parents, and much more! We can't afford to put these programs needlessly at risk. That's why Pennsylvania needs to take immediate action to prevent an undercount.

Subject: Please Ensure Pennsylvania is Prepared for the 2020 Census

Message:

As a constituent, I am writing to express my concern about an undercount in the 2020 Census. I strongly believe that the PA Legislature should include money in the state budget that will create a public fund to ensure Pennsylvania is prepared for the next Census. Between the lower levels of federal support than in previous years and the change to online collection of responses, getting an accurate count in the next Census will be more challenging than ever before. An undercount would mean a substantial reduction in the $26 billion in federal census-directed funds flowing into Pennsylvania, putting critical programs that serve children, seniors, and people with disabilities needlessly at risk of losing federal funds. A recent report from George Washington University showed that Pennsylvania is the second-most vulnerable state in terms of potentially losing federal funds that support healthcare programs in the upcoming Census; an undercount of just one percent could cost Pennsylvania more than $221.8 million each year over ten years. I strongly believe that the Commonwealth should begin preparing for the Census by establishing a public fund of at least one dollar per person - or $12.8 million total - that would support public education, in-person outreach, and direct assistance in order to ensure a complete count.
